From Disaster to Renewal
Just two weeks before Hurricane Helene struck Western North Carolina, Missed Path Sanctuary became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
Then everything changed.
The storm left us with more than $250,000 in erosion damage to our bridge, driveway, and pastures. We lost our winter hay, watched the landscape we’d worked so hard to build disappear, and faced an uncertain future.
But we didn’t close our gates.
Instead, we opened them wider.
As Asheville endured fifty-four days without running water, the sanctuary became a place of refuge. We offered hot meals, showers, laundry facilities, and, perhaps most importantly, the quiet comfort of horses. Together with World Central Kitchen and the Civilian Disaster Response Organization, we helped support our neighbors and reach isolated farming communities.
Today, the emergency has passed, but the work continues.
Our mission is no longer simply rebuilding what was lost. It’s creating a place where rescued horses can live in lifelong safety while helping people find peace, connection, and healing.
